Our History
Bear Automotive Equipment has built a legacy of innovation, quality, and American craftsmanship for more than a century. Founded in 1917 by brothers Will and Henry Damman, the company was established to design and manufacture equipment for the automotive industry during its earliest years of growth.
From the beginning, the company adopted the iconic Happy Bear symbol. At the time, the phrase “It’s a Bear” was used to describe something strong, dependable, and built to the highest standard—qualities that perfectly represented the founders’ vision of excellence.
The Damman brothers are widely recognized as pioneers in the development of wheel alignment equipment, helping shape a category that remains essential to the automotive service industry today.
Throughout the years, the Bear name and brand have evolved through different ownership transitions, while maintaining the reputation for durability, precision, and innovation that defined its origins.
Today, Bear Automotive Equipment continues proudly as an integrated manufacturer based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Our products are engineered, machined, assembled, and tested in the United States, reflecting our commitment to quality and performance.
For over 110 years, Bear has remained a trusted name in automotive service equipment—and we are just as excited about the next century of innovation.
